Portal to Peace: Walking the Labyrinth

Small group and private walks by appointment

Cultivating Sacred Space

I cultivate sacred space in my garden and life by walking the labyrinth regularly. The joy, balance and peace of mind I encounter on those walks is something I want to share with you—especially if you struggle with stress or anxiety. Labyrinth walks are offered throughout the year and small group and private walks are available by appointment. Follow Thyme with Andrea on Facebook for the latest information.

Inner Peace

I discovered the labyrinth years ago and found it such a powerful tool for transformation and inner peace that I built one in my yard in the summer of 2021.

I want to share that experience with your by offering labyrinth walks once a month on Sunday mornings at my Chartres-style Labyrinth in Great Mills, Maryland.  Follow Thyme with Andrea on Facebook for the latest information.

How to Walk a Labyrinth

There is no right or wrong way to walk the labyrinth, although it is helpful to have a few guidelines for our silent, contemplative walk.

  1. At the entrance, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Set an intention or pose a question.
  2. As you start walking, move slowly enough to stay on the path while navigating the twists and turns.
  3. Feel free to pass someone who is moving slower.
  4. When you reach the center, pause, and see what’s coming up for you.
  5. When ready, follow the path back out again.
  6. Think about how you feel and what came to mind.

BENEFITS

Manage Chronic Stress

There is scientific evidence that stress and negative emotions, particularly depression and anxiety, cause adverse effects on our physical health and ability to heal, according to Harold Koenig, a researcher at Duke University Medical Center. Other studies show that regular meditation—including walking meditation—reduces stress and helps us relax.

Calm the Mind

Walking a complicated path, like the Chartres Labyrinth, is a whole brain activity that discharges energy and begins to focus the mind. The turning left and right as you walk along the path crosses the mid-brain, creating a sense of balance, leaving the mind open and quiet. Many relax and release tension or find inner peace as they walk.

Connect with Inner Wisdom

The labyrinth is also a tool for prayer in churches, stress reduction in hospitals, rehabilitation in prisons and calming and focusing children’s minds in school.

The labyrinth is a portal to the soul, a way to connect with our inner wisdom.
